The 2009 Danny Noonan Invitational was contested on May 14th-17th, 2009 in beautiful Mesquite, Nevada. This year, we stayed at the Virgin River Hotel & Casino. The rooms were not much, but the craps table was hotter than any other of the previous eight installments of the event!!!
We first had a "warm up" round, bringing back a scramble format from the Noonan days of old. The three man team (sans Little Swede) of Mark Smith, Greg Swedenborg and CH Meili won the modified scramble event by 2 shots. Interestingly enough, all five teams were only separated by a total of eight shots.
After Thursday's modified scramble event, the fight for the coveted Noonan Cup began. The group was divided into two teams of ten, with the Blue Team coming out of the gates slow, following behind by almost 3 points after the first two groups finished on Friday, thanks to tremendous playing by Mark Smith, Jim Fricke, Andrew Swedenborg and Joe Fricke. However, the Blue Team took the rest of the points on Friday and most of the points on Saturday. Brian Wagner, Cal Reese, Mike Clem and Ryan Hadley carried the Blue team, all going undefeated in both their singles and doubles matches.
In the end, the Blue Team had a convincing 12 1/2 to 8 point victory. I blame the White team loss on our Team Captain, Jim Fricke, for not properly motivating our team (although Jim may have been the only White team member to have a winning record this year!!).
