The Gopher Award

The Gopher Award is the most prestigious award that is given at The Noonan. Anyone can win money on the golf course or in the casino, but it takes true dedication to win the Gopher!

The Gopher Award is a traveling trophy given annually to the person who displays outstanding achievement during our time each year at the Noonan. Sometimes, the Gopher Award is given for a tremendous feat, such as scoring two "Net 1's" on the golf course in the same round (Gerry Fricke in 2004).

However, it can also be given to a person who achieves outstanding achievement in a different way. For example, high centering a golf cart on a large boulder in front of the Wolf Creek Clubhouse PRIOR to the round in order to save several full beers from tumbling into the parking lot was a worthy achievement entitling me to the Gopher in 2003.

In 2006, we witnessed Tim "Ace" Botkin's historic hole in one as he snatched up the Gopher Award in inspiring fashion, while Joe Fricke earned the Gopher with his Hole-In-One in 2008 as did Tommy Steele in 2017. FYI, getting escorted to your room in a wheelchair also earns you the Gopher (just ask Charlie)!

In 2020, the Gopher Award was renamed the "Tim Monk Sr. Gopher Award" after the late Tim Monk, who was the first recipient of the Gopher in 2001.

Here are our past Gopher Award winners:

2024 - Brian "The Great Hoverer" Wilson

2023 - Mark "Smitty" Smith

2024 Gopher Award

Brian Wilson

The 2024 Noonan was a tremendous event, with a lot of new and old faces and some unique happenings throughout the five day event which made picking the Gopher winner all the more difficult.

Heck, it all started even before the Noonan officially started, where the Fricke brothers (Tim & Nacho) lost their annual bet and had to sing karoake on Tuesday evening. We also had great Captain gifts (golf balls with opponents faces, team masseusses, Captain parlays, etc) which could have made Tim Fricke, Brent Olson, Mark Smith or Bill Fricke worthy Gopher candidates.

We also had the youngsters (Chase Meili, Brendan Fricke, Finn Olson, Ross Mallo, Michael Fricke and Mason Daum), who ushered in a younger, more vibrant generation to the event.

However, at the end of the day, one guy was more worthy than all the rest. Brian Wilson, who wasn't going to be able to attend the event as recently as 18 hours prior, made it to the Noonan in spite of some personal dealings at home. And although his golf game struggled to one measly win for his team and no day money for himself, he stepped it up and helped his partner Scott Armock capture their first Noonan Horserace Title with a legendary 20 foot putt to end it. Pretty good for a guy that thought he wouldn't be there just a few hours prior. Enjoy the Gopher, BW! You earned him!

2023 Gopher Award

Mark Smith

A familiar face to the Noonan stepped up to earn the coveted Gopher Award. Mark "Smity" Smith, making his 15th Noonan appearance in 2023, captured his first Gopher due to his stellar play on the golf course. Mark came in hot and didn't miss a fairway in his first three rounds, then took that game to another level in the Horserace, carrying his team to victory. Mark, who has never been one to perform great at the Noonan, benefited from a super positive attitude throughout the event.

There were a couple other worthy candidates, including:

1. Gerry Fricke tried to get the Gopher back by not traveling with his ID

2. Cal Reese rolled at a Noonan dominated craps table and won the group an estimated $10,000!

3. Tim Botkin had Bobbleheads created of each of his team members

4. The Fricke Boys (Tim and Joey) sang karaoke and started the Noonan News

However, in the end, it just felt right awarding to Smitty, who was all smiles all weekend, much like the picture!

2022 Gopher Award

Ted McGrath

This year's Noonan had a lot of possible Gopher Award candidates. Scott Armock shot a personal best 71 and rode piggy back through a casino on a volleyball player from Utah. Adam McVeigh lost bodily fluids two different ways one day. Joe Fricke shot a Noonan record 67 on Friday morning. But one guy stepped forward. Ted McGrath, attending his 3rd Noonan in 2022, is the self proclaimed "McSizzle"....mostly because he dresses great, looks the part, and has a lot of sizzle on the golf course. However, up until this year, he had no "steak" on the course. Well, he had both sizzle and steak this year! Ted and his teammate shot a net 55 at Conestoga, which may have tied a record for low net score at the Noonan. On the flipside, he was dominating a pivotal singles match against Adam McVeigh on Saturday...until he wasn't. Leading 4 up with 4 holes to play, Ted lost the last four holes to halve the match. If he had just tied one of those holes, the Noonan Cup would have gone to his team.

However, Ted came back strong just a few moments later as he and Mark Homlish closed out former champs Scott Luinstra and Dave Rueter in the Horserace. Of course, Ted almost caused a 3 putt on the 2nd to last hole and then drove his ball into the mountain that ended up settling into a deep bunker to leave his partner with a difficult approach shot. However, Mark came through with a big shot and then Ted cozied the putt to the hole and he became a Horserace Champion. In all seriousness, Ted played steady all day Friday at the Horserace and their team deserved the victory. He further solidified the Gopher as he not only owned his team in the Horserace, he owned the 2nd place team as well, garnering $700 each for he and his partner.

Ted you earned the nickname McSizzle, but you not only have the sizzle, you now have the steak that goes with it...along with a furry friend for the next 12 months! Congrats!

2021 Gopher Award

Tim Fricke

It was a matter of time before a 3rd generation Fricke won the Gopher Award, but we didn't necessarily think it would be the first 3rd generation Fricke to attend!! However, Tim Fricke stepped up to the plate, and in only his 2nd Noonan appearance he earned this coveted prize.

Tim not only picked a correct two team NFL teaser that won OVER HALF of the Noonan attendees some quality cash the 2nd night in, he also contibuted in other ways to capture the Gopher. Tim chauffered around many of the middle aged fellas all week without complaining and showed up early and stayed late to the event. He also went a sparkling 3-1 in Noonan Cup play and earned a 2nd place finish in the Noonan Horserace despite some mid-hole struggles on the course.

Tim may have also placed a group sports bet and may have forgotten the $700 winning ticket in Mesquite, but we won't get into that. Congrats Tim! Enjoy the Gopher for the next 365 days!!

(Tim pictured on the far right at the Final 2 photo of the 2021 Horserace)

2020 Gopher Award

Scott Luinstra

Longtime Noonan attendee Scott "Scooter" Luinstra has had a storied career at the Noonan. His match play record is literally "unmatched" and he has long been regarded as the best golfer to attend the Noonan. Scooter is also known for other less "outstanding achievements" over the years as well but we won't get into those. Through it all he has been a great competitor, friend, teammate and most especially a great person with a heart of gold. So, when Scooter won his elusive "Burgandy Blazer" in the 2020 Horserace, he was brought to tears with emotion. This alone was Gopher worthy. Additionally, when Scooter showed up in the lobby looking like he does in the photo on the right, that sealed the deal for him. So, on Saturday, October 10th, 2020, Mr. Scott Luinstra was presented the Gopher by his longtime friend and former DU teammate Joe Fricke. Scooter was speachless, and more tears of joy may have been shed. Congrats, Scott. You earned it!

2019 Gopher Award

Joe Fricke

There have now been 4 Holes in One at the Noonan. The likelihood of a hole in one is 1 in 12,000 for the average golfer, and 1 in 2,500 for the tour pro. We have been lucky enough to have 4 holes in one over the last 19 years, roughly 1 in every 1,200 par 3's played at the Noonan! When you get a hole in one at the Noonan, it is special. Special enough to win the Gopher award! Joe Fricke has won the Gopher Award a record 3 times...the first one for high centering a cart on a boulder in front of the Wolf Creek clubhouse (2003)...not his finest moment. The last two Gopher Awards were earned for hitting a hole in one in 2008 and then again this year at Falcon Ridge. It was a blind shot and he actually thought his ball was Mike Daum's ball because Mike had hit it 2 feet from the cup. When he looked in the hole, he saw the photo on the right.....

2018 Gopher Award

Mike Quam

This year was an easy choice for the Gopher Award. Mike Quam earned coveted prize almost from the very minute he arrived in Vegas. The head of his golf driver was snapped as he opened his clubs from his travel bag. He then proceeded to snap the head off of the "demo" driver from the Pro Shop within 30 minutes of teeing off on Friday afternoon. But then came Saturday, where Mike really stepped up to earn the furry prize. Mike and his Horserace partner, Jeff "Kevin" Jones, were eliminated on the first hole of the Horserace on Saturday afternoon. After Mike zinged a batted a golf ball inches past CH Meili's knee with his putter, he and his partner decided to retreat to the Oasis bar as opposed to watching the rest of the Horserace event. The next 3 hours (and following 18 hours for Mike) were quite a blur for both Mike and Jeff as Mike proceeded to buy the clubhouse (including the waitresses) rounds and rounds of drinks. Mike was seen behind the bar, in the kitchen, and actually serving drinks to every patron in the place. All said and done, Mike garnered a $745 bar tab that was graciously paid by Mike (although Jim Fricke actually signed for Mike's card for him). Mike didn't make dinner that evening, but did get a KP the next day and his partner noted the KP with the name "$745". Congrats Mike...you went way above and beyond to earn the Gopher in 2018!!

2017 Gopher Award

Tommy Steele

Well....sometimes it is difficult to pick the Gopher Award winner. Kevin....errr, I mean Jeff Jones, had the dubious honor of picking this year's recipient. Up until the last 45 minutes of the event, Jeff was in line to be the first person to win the Gopher award two years in a row after fatally injuring a duck by hitting a ball up its rear end.

However, Jeff was let off the hook after Tommy "I have too many nicknames" Steele made the 3rd Hole In One in Noonan history. Tommy made an ACE on the 15th hole at Wolf Creek on the final day, securing his spot in Noonan lore forever.

The man who has too many nicknames already can now be called ACE forever. Congrats, Tommy! You earned the Gopher!

2016 Gopher Award

Jeff Jones

Not since 2007 has a Rookie won the prestigious Gopher Award. Most of the time a Rookie doesn't understand what it takes to win the Gopher, but with what transpired in 2016, there was one clear cut choice.

Mr. Jeff Jones, whose antics before the Noonan even officially began will be legendary in Noonan lore, took home the furry little beast in his Noonan debut. Jeff not only brought his wife's car keys to the airport on the trip out (the keys took a $100 limo ride back to the Mrs.), but he grabbed the wrong golf clubs off the caurosel when arriving in Las Vegas. Of course, that didn't stop him from playing with the "borrowed" clubs. Even though Jeff (or Kevin as he is now known throughout Nevada), had the highest handicap at the 2016 Noonan, he somehow earned his limo money back 10 fold on the course by placing 2nd in the Horserace and winning consistent day money. This, coupled with the fact he grounded his club continuously in the Wolf Creek sand traps checking his alignment, makes Kevin the run away winner of the 2016 Gopher Award! Congrats Kevin....errr, I mean....Jeff!

2015 Gopher Award

Charlie Hambrick

Any Noonan attendee knows, it is very difficult to win the Gopher Award even one time....so when someone steps up and wins it twice in a five year span, it is to be commended.

When you toss your 7-Iron deep in a cavern during the Noonan Horserace, it is worthy of this distinguished honor. Congrats, Chuckles....take the Gopher on another ride for the next year.

2014 Gopher Award

Ron Maspero

Some years it is difficult to award the Gopher, and sometimes the winner presents himself above and beyond everyone else. This year's Gopher Award Winner is the Godfather himself, Ron Maspero.

Even though Ron has attended the 2nd Most Noonans in history, he has strangely never been in contention for this coveted award. However, he jumped (or in this case fell) into the prize. Although scary when it happened and not something we weren't laughing about at the time, Ron experienced a little heat stroke during the Horserace this year. Once we found out he was in good shape later that evening after a quick trip to the hospital, he was the obvious choice for the Gopher. We actually think he was in more danger of getting waterboarded by Charlie than anything else! A class act and a good friend, the Godfather accepted the Gopher with pride and I'm sure he and his new furry buddy will have some adventures over the next year....until Ron gets to bestow this prize to another worthy attendee!

2013 Gopher Award

CH Meili

It would have appeared that there was a clear cut winner for the Gopher Award in 2013. But upon further review, it was determined that it shouldn't go to the guy who put the golf cart in the lake on the first hole at Wolf Creek, but to the person who it affected most, his cart mate. Jason Kickhaefer dumped the cart in the water, but his playing partner seemed more deserving of the award for the trials he went through at the 2013 Noonan. CH Meili not only lost his phone and sunglasses in the merky haze of the pond, but also "contributed" to the Horserace victory in 2013. By contributing that means he hit one shot in play in the first six holes of the Horserace event. But nothing effects the heart of a champion, and CH came through in the clutch, hitting an over the water shot to the green on hole #6 and securing his team's spot in the finals. Not bad for a 26 handicap! CH had some highs (Horserace championship) and lows (brand new golf bag got a bath at Wolf Creek), so he is well deserving of the Gopher Award this year. He just hopes his playing partner in 2014 can keep the cart on the cart path!!

2012 Gopher Award

Frank Swedenborg

The 2012 Gopher Award was presented at the Closing Ceremonies Dinner on May 19th, 2012. Normally the task of picking the winner of this prestigious award is a very difficult task. However, this year, someone stepped up to capture this unique prize. Given for outstanding achievement, the 2012 winner exhibited a number of things that put him to the top. Mr. Frank "Old Swede" Swedenborg has never won this award in his many years attending the Noonan, and it appeared he made it his mission to finally go home with this furry trophy. Old Swede started his quest early in 2012 by imploring the Noonan Commissioner to add strokes to his already inflated handicap. When the Commissioner replied, "I'll raise your handicap when you get a notarized document from Santa Claus.", Old Swede took it as a challenge. The attached document arrived on the Commissioner's doorstep a few months later (a notarized certificate from Mrs. Claus).

Old_Swede_Certificate.pdf
49.4 KB

Old Swede went to big lengths to raise his handicap, but the Commissioner wasn't biting based on Frank's sandbagging past. He left Frank's handicap the same, and Frank still went out and posted a 4-0 record at this year's event (the only undefeated record at the 2012 Noonan).

This wasn't the only reason he claimed the The Gopher. Frank has long been known as an accomplished dancer, and when Twinkle Toes Frank did two pirouettes across THREE slick bowling lanes at the 2012 Bowling event before landing smoothly back on his feet, it solidifed his claim for the Gopher. For those that saw this dance move, it was one of the most unique moments in Noonan history. Frank, you deserve this award....it's been a long time coming!!!

2011 Gopher Award

Charlie Hambrick

The 2011 Gopher Award was presented at the Closing Ceremonies Dinner on May 14th, 2011. CH Meili, the 2010 Winner, was charged with picking the recipient of this "prestigious" award. CH had a difficult decision to make, as many people stepped up to the occasion. Jason Kickhaefer tried his best to earn the award back from CH by dropping the transmission in his golf cart on Friday morning and almost losing his putter in the lone tree on the golf course that same day (after being eliminated on the first hole of the Horserace). Ryan Hadley missed the bus to the golf course in Primm, making him a viable candidate. However, one man stepped up more than any person during the 2011 Noonan (& maybe ever). Mr. Charlie Hambrick had a few too many cocktails on Friday, causing him to be carted up to his room from dinner by the fine security guards at Buffalo Bill's. Taken by wheelchair to his room at 8:30 p.m., he is now known by his Noonan brethren as "Chairman Charlie". In true Noonan spirit, however, Charlie was enjoying a screwdriver on the bus the very next morning, while most would have been in the hospital. Enjoy the Gopher, "Chairman", you've earned it!!!

2010 Gopher Award

CH Meili

The 2010 Gopher Award was again presented at the Closing Ceremonies on Saturday night. Jason Kickhaefer, this year's presenter, had many choices as far as potential recipients for the Gopher Award. In the end, C.H. Meili "won" out. C.H. not only combined for the lowest two man net total (57) on Friday's round, he won the Horserace for a record tying 2nd time. CH also hit one of the most amazing shots in Noonan History with a blind, crazy, under-a-tree-behind-the-junction box sand wedge that ended up 8 feet from the hole (not bad for a 26 handicap). Seve Ballesteros would have been proud! This shot kept his team in the competition and they eventually won the toughest event in all of Sports! Enjoy the Gopher, Mr. Meili!!!

2009 Gopher Award

Brad Ferguson & Jason Kickhaefer

The 2009 Gopher Award was presented at the Saturday Night "Closing Ceremonies". Joe Fricke had the "honor" of presenting the award. This year, it was tough to choose a winner. However, two attendees rose above the rest to cement their place in Noonan History. In fact, they worked in tandem so well, that they shared the award. Brad Ferguson and Jason Kickhaefer made it easy after their on course and in casino antics. No, it wasn't their great play on the course, but on Friday amidst their large team loss on the course, Brad made history by hitting the first innocent bystander with a tee shot on hole 14. Brad sliced a ball so far out of bounds that he hit a Mexican gardener in the leg with his ball. It gets even better. Instead of having a guy like acclaimed trial attorney and fellow Noonan attendee Ted Buck "negotiate" a settlement, Brad chose Jason to let him do the talking. After haggling over $100 cash, an agreement was made with the non-english speaking man, so Brad & Jason could resume their poor play on the course. Between this event and their antics at the Blackjack tables, they truly stepped up to win the award. By giving the award to these guys, the big question will be, will we ever see the Gopher Trophy again????

The 2008 Gopher Award was presented at the Saturday Night "Closing Ceremonies". Last year's winner, Travis Hoover, had the honor of presenting the 8th Gopher Award in Noonan History. Travis presented the award to Joe Fricke (yes, me). As the first Two-time winner of the Gopher Award, I can honestly say that I am extremely proud of winning

Travis presented the award to Joe Fricke (yes, me). As the first Two-time winner of the Gopher Award, I can honestly say that I am extremely proud of winning the Gopher this year. Winning it for high centering a golf cart on a boulder in front of the Wolf Creek clubhouse back in '03 was "special", but this was just a little more. Why? I had the pleasure of earning my first "true" hole in one (my other went off a tree in college golf practice at DU - see Brian Wagner for details). As much golf as I've played in my life, I am still stunned it happened. Because it occured at the Noonan playing with good friends (see photo), it was even more sweet. Honestly, it was the best golf moment of my life. Maybe Tim "Ace" Botkin and I are starting a trend!!

The funny thing is, I almost arranged for a hole in one contest through a marketing company for all the par 3's at the Noonan this year. I decided against it at the last minute. So the only disappointing thing about the hole in one is that I could have had $10,000 in addition to the prestige!!

In 2007, we had several candidates vying for the coveted Gopher. The Blankenburg Brothers (Ric & Chad), who both lost their singles matches 1 up after leading by 4 holes with 5 to play, were in the mix. In 2007, we had several candidates vying for the coveted Gopher. The Blankenburg Brothers (Ric & Chad), who both lost their singles matches 1 up after leading by 4 holes with 5 to play, were in the mix. I didn't think it was possible to lose a match when up that much, but to have two brothers do it on the same day is Gopher worthy. Another potential Gopher candidate was Gerry Fricke, who after he found out he and Phil Blankenburg fired a NET 101 on day 1 of the alternate shot, made the comment, "That's not nearly as bad as I thought...".

Another worthy candidate that came up just short of winning was CH "The Bookmaker" Meili. CH offered to place a two team parlay for a group of us on the Cavs and Spurs. He wrote the bets down so he wouldn't get it wrong. Well, the Cavs and Spurs covered, but CH mistakenly bet on the Nets instead of the Cavs (see the betting ticket below). It's hard enough to win a parlay, but betting on the right team sure would have helped!!!

In the end, it was one of this year's Rookies that stepped up to win the Gopher Award. Travis "Stucco" Hoover not only broke his 3 wood (accidently) and three putted four times for net birdie in round 1, but he allegedly (his lawyer and playing partner Ted Buck made me add "allegedly") hit a ball out of bounds under a lady's deck and damaged her stucco. Although the golfers in the group believe that there was no feasible way his shot could have done this, Travis paid the lady $30 after negotiating it down from $50. He gets the Gopher for not necessarily hitting the deck with his shot, but for actually paying the lady on her daily scam. By the way, Travis also won $2,500 in the casino the first night. Never a dull moment when Travis is around! He is the first rookie to win the award, but may not be the last!!! Enjoy the Gopher Travis, you have it for one year!
