The Mike Clem Spirit Stein

A staple for seven (7) straight Noonans, Mr. Mike Clem (pictured above left) is one of the great guys. Mike passed away after complications of a stroke he suffered back in 2012. However, his spirit at the Noonan will continue forever.

Mike's positive personality and jovial attitude (& love for craft beer) were such an important part of the Noonan that we have developed an award in his honor. His wife, Linda, displayed Mike's love for the Noonan by placing his Spirit Stein on "Mikey's Shrine" (see picture below).

All of the past winners including a video of them are included below....enjoy!!

2024 Mike Clem Spirit Award

Gerry Fricke

So much spirit was displayed at the 2024 Noonan! We had an unprecedented amount of Rookies, all of which were so excited to be there. Most of them loved all the golf courses (all were .500 or better), had a great time at dinner and in the casino, and pitched in to help when needed. The coaches (Mark Smith, Bill Fricke, Tim Fricke and Brent Olson), went above and beyond with team gifts such as $600 Captain Parlay, Logo'd trunk organizers, masseuses, team hats, championship t-shirts and personalized golf balls with their opponents face on them! If that's not spirit, I'm not sure what is! However, at the end of the day, a guy almost 70 years OLDER than the Rookies stepped forward. Gerry Fricke won the Spirit Stein again (2020) because of his participation on the golf course, dinner as well as the casino (92 year old Ger played craps until 11:45 one night)! His best friend is named after the Stein, and now he holds the original and the awarded stein for the next 365 days. Enjoy Ger, we know you will!

2023 Mike Clem Spirit Award

Joe & Tim Fricke

Over the years, the spirit of the Noonan keeps getting stronger and stronger. This year, we went to new heights. We had so many worthy candidates for the Spirit Stein:

1. Adam and Ted McGrath wearing team shirts with their opponents faces on them.

2. The Transfusion Twins - Scotty A and Brian Wilson wore matching team shirts for the Horserace and had the clubhouse announce the "Transfusion Horserace" over the loud speaker.

3. Jimmy C with a fancy jump suit for dinner on Saturday night

4. Ted "Drone" McGrath adding some drone footage to the Horserace.

5. CH creating another "hype" video for his team.

All of these are worthy of the Noonan Spirit Stein. However, Tim and Joe Fricke really stepped up as they started the "Noonan News" where they interviewed everyone at the Horserace (using a Tito's bottle as the microphone). In addition, they started out the Noonan singing karoake on Tuesday night after losing a bet on the golf course, serenading Dan Steele with "Reeling in the Years". They came up big and deserve the "new and improved" Stein, which was upgraded by last year's winner, CH Meili. Congrats Fricke boys, hope you find a way to share it for the next 360 days!

2022 Mike Clem Spirit Award

CH Meili

There was a lot of "spirit" at the Noonan this year.  Scott Armock shot personal best 71 and was so excited he got a piggy back ride on the back of a Amazon-like volleyball player in the casino. Adam McVeigh had so much fun he had trouble holding onto his bodily fluids one morning. However, one guy stepped up and inspired his team...along with the other team on Friday night at the Noonan. CH Meili (pictured on the very right with two of his teammates) did his best Herb Brooks imitation as he recanted the speech from the movie Miracle for his teammates. The video will most certainly go viral if we can figure out how to upload it to the internet :). CH is not a stranger to this award as he won it back in 2019. CH (with the help of Jim Fricke) took his Captaincy and spirit to a whole new level with various gifts (including towels, hats, shirts, snacks, etc) for his team. He truly earned the Stein and will know doubt put it to good use for the next 12 months. Congrats Big Shooter. Herb would be proud!

2021 Mike Clem Spirit Award

Adam McVeigh

We've got some newer Noonan attendees who stepped up in hopes of earning the coveted Spirit Stein. Rookie Scott Armock became "Cooler Boy" by stocking and maintaining the beer cooler for the entire event. 2nd year attendee Tim Fricke drove 8-10 guys to three different golf courses in three different states over the long weekend. However, ADAM "the Controller" MCVEIGH really made a name for himself and displayed a TON of spirit by providing the scoring Leaderboards (his wife helped with the handwriting), organizing and maintaining the day money, scoreboards and side bets the entire trip. He put in plenty of extra hours to help make the 2021 Noonan a huge success.

Adam (standing on the bench in the photo) showed spirit in shouting to Jimmy, "Oh Captain My Captain" during the Opening night of the Noonan.

2020 Mike Clem Spirit Award

Gerry Fricke

This man has done it all at the Noonan....Horserace Champion, Noonan Hall of Famer, Gopher Award Winner...and now he has earned the award that probably means the most to him..The Mike Clem Spirit Stein. Gerry Fricke's best friend in life was Mike Clem (pictured above). The fact that Gerry has earned an award named after Mike is truly appropriate, because Gerry epitomizes the Spirit of the Noonan. Always in a great mood, ready to have fun, and his commitment to the event is unparalelled (19 straight appearances). Gerry helped create the awards program for the 20th Annual Celebration as he spent countless hours designing and creating the videos that recapped the last 20 years. I know I speak for everyone when I say that we all wish we have as much Spirit as Ger when we are 88 years young....if we are all as lucky as Ger to make it that long. Congrats Gerry! This award means a lot to you, and you mean a lot to us!

2019 Mike Clem Spirit Award

CH Meili

The Noonan always has spirit, and this year is no different. One man whose life ambition was to achieve the Noonan Grand Slam was one award short....and it was the spirit Stein that had eluded him for the last 8 years. BUT NO LONGER! CH Meili has been a Noonan Captain, a 7 time Noonan Horserace Champ, and a Noonan Hall of Famer. However, he had never won the Spirit Stein. But with his energy and spirit at this year's Horserace and his commitment to helping plan the 2019 Noonan, he earned the Spirit Stein as presented to him by Tim Botkin. CH dropped the mic (& his putter) with his 7 footer in the Horserace and celebrated like no one ever has at the Noonan. He rightfully earned the last leg of his Noonan Slam this year!

2018 Mike Clem Spirit Award

Tim Botkin

The 2018 Noonan had a bit of a different feel, as we moved to the Rising Star Sports Ranch. One gentlemen made this transition truly awesome, and for that, Tim Botkin has earned the Mike Clem Spirit Stein Award this year. Tim not only had the beer on ice and the snacks ready for the group when the tour bus arrived, he went above and beyond by sponsoring glass beer mugs and Botkin & Bailey business cards...hilarious and well thought out at the same time!

He also "sponsored" the Noonan Horserace as evidenced to the picture on the right...The Spirit Stein is alive and well, and it is in the form of Tim Botkin. Congrats Timmy!

2017 Mike Clem Spirit Award

Dan Steele

There was indeed a whole lot of spirit at the 2017 Noonan, but someone had to win....and that person has so much spirit he's actually won the Spirit Stein Award before. Yes, Dan Steele (known more by his common name Steely Dan), the original Spirit Stein winner, has again won this prestigious honor. Steely showed his spirit by purchasing numberous fireball shots for everyone after his Dad got a hole in one on the last day at Wolf Creek....Steely appeared more excited than his Pops! Steely has more fire, spunk and excitement than anyone other player in Noonan History. And now he has two Spirit Stein Awards to prove it! Congrats Danny Boy, you are indeed a man full of spirit!

2016 Mike Clem Spirit Award

Mike McCoy

Well, it has been fitting that there have been a few Mikes that have won the Mike Clem Spirit Stein Award over the last five years, and this year was no different. This year's recipient of the Mike Clem Spirit Stein Award is none other than 3 time Noonan attendee Mike McCoy (pictured to the right of Mike Quam on the photo to your right). No one has more fun at the Noonan than this guy, who is always ready to cut loose at the course, the bar or the casino. Truly deserving of this award, Mike McCoy continues the tradition of great Mikes! Congrats, McCoy!

2015 Mike Clem Spirit Award

Jim Fricke

Mike Daum, the 2014 recipient of the Mike Clem Spirit Stein, had the honor of presenting the stein to a new recipient in 2015. He bestowed this honor to none other than Jim Fricke, who not only dressed up for the occasion (see photo right), but took his enthusiam to a whole new level. Enjoy the cup, Jimmy! You earned it!

2014 Mike Clem Spirit Award

Mike Daum

Mike Quam, the 2013 recipient of the Mike Clem Spirit Stein, had the dubious honor of passing on the Stein to it's new recipient. The 2014 winner of the Mike Clem Spirit Stein is none other than Mike Daum (pictured in the photo on the left). That makes two Mikes in a row, so we don't have to get a new key chain for the handle :)!

Mike Daum's great attitude and jocularity make him a well deserved selection. He is often referred to as the "Clown Prince of the Noonan". Mike Daum always had a special connection with Mike Clem as well, as evidenced by their shaved domes and love for craft beer! Mike has the honor of using this cup for the next 365 days until he bestows it on another worthy Noonan attendee. Enjoy the cup, Mike!

2013 Mike Clem Spirit Award

Mike Quam

The 2013 Mike Clem Spirit Stein award winner was none other than Mike Quam. Mike is well deserving of this award, as his positive attitude and enjoyment of the Noonan inspired everyone, both on the golf course and on the craps tables! Mike's attitude propelled his team to the Horserace finals and his energy on the driving range that evening was hilarious if not a little stupid. Throwing balls back from the range to the tee box is an interesting concept, and not one I'd recommend. Although we misplaced the original Mike Clem Spirit Stein somewhere in the casino, we were able to come up with a "replacement" Stein to commemerate the event (as you can see from the picture below). Congrats Mike! You get to award the Stein to a new recipient in 2014!!

2012 Mike Clem Spirit Award

Dan Steele

In 2012, we honored Dan Steele (or Steely Dan to those that know him) as the FIRST recipient of the Mike Clem Spirit Stein. There are only two Spirit Steins in the world...Mike Clem had one of them and Steely Dan (pictured to the right) had possession of the other for the next 364 days until the 2013 Noonan. This traveling trophy is a great tribute to a great man. I'm sure Steely Dan will take full advantage of his stein over the next year until he bestows it to someone else in 2013.Congrats, Steely!
